Temporary Position at Legal Counsel for the Elderly

Legal Counsel for the Elderly is accepting resumes for a temporary staff attorney position for its Homebound Elderly Project.  The position is an 8 month assignment through December 2017.  Send a cover letter and resume to tsnelson@aarp.org.

Here is the position description:

Provides legal advice and counsel to homebound clients of Legal Counsel for the Elderly under the Homebound Elderly Project. Provides legal representation predominantly before administrative governmental agencies and periodically in court.  Representation involves civil matters involving older DC residents.

 

II. Task Statements

1.      Provides representation and/or timely accurate information, legal advice, referral, self-help materials, and guidance in a variety of civil matters to older DC residents in their homes.

2.      Legal services include, but are not limited to, estate planning (e.g. wills and powers of attorney), public benefits (e.g. food stamps, Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, health-related benefits), debt collection defense, other consumer, and landlord/tenant matters.    Cases primarily involve non-complex litigation.

3.      Effectively administers assigned cases and ensures that client problems are identified and resolved promptly, efficiently, and in an organized manner.

4.      Participates in community outreach and workshops as requested.

5.      Maintains accurate, contemporaneous, and complete records and notes in the case management system concerning cases handled.

6.      Provides guidance to, refers cases and monitors work of volunteer attorneys, legal assistants and interns on assigned cases.   Handles other projects as assigned.

7.      Attends training courses and conferences related to the work of the Project.

8.      Possesses a demonstrated interest in public interest law.

 

III. Latitude

Positions at this level exercise project latitude to accomplish assigned work duties and responsibilities.  Positions directly contribute to the achievement of group goals and objectives. Reports to Supervisory Legal Aid Attorney for the Homebound Elderly Project.

 

IV. Education and Work Requirements

Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree, a member in good standing of the DC Bar, and at least 2-4 years of directly related legal experience. Willingness to work with volunteers. Foreign language skills a plus.  Must have reliable transportation for home visits throughout the city.
