 Neighborhood Legal Services Program (“NLSP”), a private, non-profit law firm that provides high quality civil legal services to low-income residents of the District of Columbia, seeks to hire a Temporary Family Law Staff Attorney with at least two years of family law experience and knowledge of family law practice in the District of Columbia.  This position will be located in NLSP’s Ward 7 office at 4609 Polk Street NE, Washington, D.C. Anticipated period of this employment is 3-4 months (Late November 2016-February 2017).

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Provide high quality civil legal services to clients in the area of family law, using a variety of advocacy tools, including not but limited to: brief service and advice, negotiation, and direct representation in trials/court proceedings.

  • Actively participate as a member of the NLSP team, including but not limited to participation in cross-office activities and advocacy.
  • Adhere to program and case handling policies, procedures and standards of practice, as well as adherence to the highest professional and ethical standards.
  • Other responsibilities, as assigned.


  • JD, member in good standing of, or eligible to waive into, the DC Bar
  • Minimum two years of family law experience
  • Knowledge of human rights law highly desirable
  • Familiarity with DC, including its government, courts, and the Bar
  • Experience working with low income communities or organizations serving those members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Cross-cultural competence
  • Commitment to a flexible, comprehensive view of representation on behalf of low income people that values both individual and systemic advocacy and appreciates the value of multi-forum approaches to achieving advocacy goals
  • Ability to identify and respond to shifting trends in legal practice and policies affecting the poor
  • Enthusiastic team player

Salary/Benefits – Depends upon experience, paid NLSP holidays.
