Legal Counsel for the Elderly part-time atty position

March 18, 2016

LCE seeks an attorney or law school graduate to work 20 hours per week from April to August 2016, to assist with LCE’s Schedule H Tax Project. The candidate does not need to be a member of any bar. The salary is $25/hour.

Schedule H is a DC tax credit for low-income individuals with high housing costs, providing a benefit of up to $1,000 per year. LCE’s Schedule H Tax Project assists low-income seniors who do not need to file a full tax return.  LCE staff and volunteers meet with clients, assist them with filling out the Schedule H forms, advise them regarding supporting documentation, and follow up with the Office of Tax Revenue regarding disposition.  LCE also conducts Schedule H pro bono clinics at DC law firms.

The attorney will be responsible for working with clients to ensure high attendance rates at pro bono clinics, reviewing documents completed at clinics, meeting with clients who did not bring all necessary documents to the clinics, and advocating on behalf of clients when the credit is improperly denied.  The temporary attorney will also utilize telephone interpreter services to provide assistance to clients who do not speak English and conduct home visits to homebound clients.

Prior experience working with low-income and/or disadvantaged populations is preferred.  Training will be provided regarding the Schedule H credit, and no prior knowledge of tax law is needed.

It is possible that additional hours, for a combined total up to 40 per week, will be available to meet the short term needs of other units at LCE.

To apply, submit a resume, writing sample and two references to Rochelle Bobroff, Senior Attorney for Systemic Reform, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, rbobroff@aarp.org.
