Neighborhood Legal Svcs (DC) Staff Attorney Position

Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP), a private, non-profit law firm that provides high quality civil legal services to low-income residents of the District of Columbia, seeks a Staff Attorney who will focus on a range of civil cases, using a variety of advocacy tools including litigation, community education and creative collaborations with other stakeholders and community partners.  The Staff Attorney should have at least three years of experience including civil litigation, preferably in a public interest or legal aid environment, be passionate about achieving justice and overcoming barriers facing low-income people, and be a creative team-player committed to securing lasting results for clients and low-income communities.

The Staff Attorney will be located in NLSP’s Ward 7 office at 4609 Polk St.NE., Washington, DC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide high quality civil legal services to clients using a variety of advocacy tools, including but not limited to: negotiation, representation in administrative hearings and litigation, community education and media advocacy.
  • Maintain an active litigation docket.
  • Conduct community education and outreach.
  • Actively participate as a member of the NLSP team, including but not limited to participation in cross-office activities and advocacy.
  • Adhere to program and case handling policies, procedures and standards of practice, as well as the highest professional and ethical standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • D. degree from an accredited law school, member in good standing of the DC Bar, or member of another State Bar and eligible for admission to the D.C. Bar.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons.
  • At least three years of civil litigation experience.
  • Prior public interest or civil legal aid experience highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with teams.
  • Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.


The Staff Attorney will report to an NLSP Managing Attorney or NLSP’s Director of Litigation & Advocacy.

Salary:  Depends upon experience; excellent benefits.
