To better support AARP’s priorities and mobilize volunteers and members in Washington, D.C, Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) has championed the dignity and rights of Washington, D.C.’s elderly by providing free legal and social work services to those in need — empowering, defending and protecting vulnerable seniors.

The Pro Bono Project of LCE provides legal representation and counsel to clients of AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) primarily by developing, referring and monitoring cases sent to pro bono attorneys in private practice or working for the government.

Responsibilities
  • Helps develop, screen and place pro bono cases with private sector attorneys and law firms.
  • Helps monitor, advise, and counsel pro bono attorneys accepting referrals on legal issues, court procedures, merits of cases, and strategy.
  • Troubleshoots where issues arise and refers to the supervisor where appropriate.
  • Helps supervise volunteer paralegals and attorneys working at LCE to ensure they give legal accurate information to pro bono attorneys and responds to volunteer paralegals’ concerns.
  • Administers computerized process of broadcasting digests of cases for referral to attorneys in private practice and the government.
  • Through the targeted intake process, identifies, screens, develops and evaluates the merits of new cases obtained from area legal services providers, senior citizens centers, social workers, and judicial systems. Handles “active intake” cases.
  • Plans, develops and conducts onsite legal clinics to obtain new cases through the targeted intake program. Administers the Asian outreach plan. Completes reports as needed for these projects.
  •  Memorializes initiatives taken by writing articles summarizing methodology.
  • Helps pro bono manager with Pro Bono Publico newsletter. Writes articles for each issue of newsletter.
  • Assists supervisor with case handling responsibilities.
  • Runs legal clinics at law firms.
Requirements
The appropriate candidate will be someone that exercises a significant level of autonomy and independent judgment and has the ability to navigate through complex, sensitive and confidential legal issues.  They must have the ability to understand and decipher problems creatively and to recommend positive interventions and resolutions.

Additional requirements include:

  • Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree
  • A member of the DC Bar or eligible to waive in
  • Minimum of 2 years legal experience preferably in a legal services setting (clinical experience may count toward this requirement)
  • Strong problem-solving and multi-tasking skills required
  • Demonstrated commitment to poverty/public interest law with low income seniors
  • Knowledge of the District of Columbia elder and poverty law as well as legal and social service communities a plus
  • Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Amenability to local travel
  • Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) speaking a plus
