Summer 2015 Externship — FTC – Office of Comm. Terrell McSweeny

February 2, 2015

FTC Commissioner Terrell McSweeny has an unpaid internship position in her office for this upcoming summer. This opportunity is open to first and second year law students. Students must be available to work full-time and are eligible to receive academic credit.
The Federal Trade Commission is a bipartisan, independent agency charged with examining a host of competition and consumer protection issues across the economy. The Commission enforces the antitrust laws, evaluates mergers, brings actions against unfair and deceptive advertising and trade practices, and, in recent years, has been at the forefront of developments in consumer privacy and data security.
As a member of the staff for the summer, the legal intern will perform legal research and evaluate recommendations for law enforcement action. He or she will also write memoranda and case summaries, brief Commissioner McSweeny on various aspects of law and policy, participate in meetings with outside parties and agency staff, draft external communications, and assist the office’s attorney advisors and paralegal with assignments as needed.
An in-depth knowledge of antitrust, competition, or consumer protection law is not needed, but an interest in these areas of law is. We are looking for an intern with strong analytical, research, writing, and interpersonal skills, paired with an ability to turn around high quality work within a short time frame. A sense of humor and the flexibility to write a legal brief one day and a blog post the next are important.
Interested applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, short writing sample (no more than five pages), and a list of three references to Christina Luo (cluo@ftc.gov). In the subject line of your application email, please include your first and last name, as well as the title “Summer 2015 Internship Application.” Commissioner McSweeny’s office will work with the student on schedule and attendance.
