University Legal Services, Inc., Protection and Advocacy Program – full-time attorney position.

The mission of University Legal Services’ Protection and Advocacy Program is to ensure that District of Columbia residents with disabilities have the legal rights to which they are entitled, including the right to be free from harm, the right to individual choice and the right to full inclusion in the community.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Providing direct legal representation and advocacy to mental health consumers and individuals with traumatic brain injury;
* Providing technical legal assistance, outreach, and training to providers, government agencies, consumer groups, and persons with disabilities;
* Conducting investigations of alleged abuse and neglect of individuals with disabilities; and
* Conducting outreach and community legal education workshops for individuals in psychiatric hospital.
Qualifications Required:
* A J.D. from an accredited school of law;
* Admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia or be eligible for admission;
Demonstrated effective written and oral communication and problem solving skills;
* Willingness and ability to travel to all areas of the District of Columbia, and to work evenings and weekends when necessary;
* The ability to work collaboratively and creatively with clients, other attorneys, non-lawyer advocates, and community organizations;
* Comfort working in psychiatric facilities, nursing facilities, shelters, and other similar facilities;
* Demonstrated commitment to recovery-based, self-directed mental health services.

Qualifications Preferred:
* Experience in civil rights and/or public benefits law;
* Three to five years of experience doing direct client representation;
* Familiarity with the District of Columbia, including local government agencies, public interest organizations and community resources; and
* Proficiency in Spanish or Amharic.
Generous legal services salary scale, depending on experience.
