University Legal Services (DC) – employment law attorney position (part-time)

University Legal Services, Inc., Protection and Advocacy Program (ULS) has an immediate opening for a part-time (20 hours a week) employment law attorney. The attorney will join our new Employment Law Project, dedicated to removing barriers to employment for individuals with disabilities.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Represent Social Security beneficiaries to remove barriers to work, including assisting beneficiaries with disabilities in accessing training, employment accommodations, and Social Security work incentive programs;

* Represent individuals to challenge employment discrimination that serves as a barrier to work for beneficiaries with disabilities by providing direct representation, outreach and education, and alternative dispute resolution;

* Advocate for access to employment-related programs that lead to competitive employment at competitive wages; and

* Provide information, referral, and advocacy services regarding services and supports that may impact a beneficiary’s ability to obtain, maintain, or retain employment, including but not limited to transportation services, personal care assistants, childcare, assistive technology, and healthcare.

Qualifications Required:

* A J.D. from an accredited school of law;

* Admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia or be eligible for immediate admission;

* Demonstrated effective written and oral communication and problem solving skills;

* At least three years litigation experience;

* Willingness and ability to travel to all areas of the District of Columbia, and to work evenings and weekends when necessary;

* The ability to work collaboratively and creatively with other attorneys, non-lawyer advocates, and community organizations;

* Commitment to combating unemployment and underemployment of people with disabilities, and ensuring that District residents with disabilities have access to desegregated, paying jobs.

Qualifications Preferred:

* Experience in employment discrimination law;

* Familiarity with the District of Columbia, including local government agencies, public interest organizations and community resources;

* Familiarity with employment law;

* Proficiency in Spanish, Amharic, or American Sign Language.

 

Generous legal services salary scale, depending on experience. Health insurance available.
