Organizational Overview:

With over 200 staff worldwide and a $100M operating budget, Special Olympics International (SOI) serves as the central governing organization of the Special Olympics Movement, coordinating and overseeing its 225 accredited Special Olympics programs, each of which is an independent entity with its own governing body and professional staff. SOI partners closely with the political, business, sports, health, education, entertainment and media leadership in each country and each state where Special Olympics Programs exist. Both SOI’s leadership and grassroots constituencies work tirelessly to bring the joy of sport to athletes with intellectual disabilities around the world.

The Special Olympics movement combines amateur sports and human rights, with 4.2 million athletes in over 170 countries. Special Olympics World Summer Games and World Winter Games are held every four years: the most recent World Summer Games were held in Athens, Greece in 2011, World Winter Games were held in Pyeongchang, Korea in February 2013. The next world Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2015. Special Olympics has regional offices in Beijing, Dublin, Cairo, Johannesburg, Singapore, Panama City and Raleigh, NC. 

Position Summary: 

This position is crucial to the biennial accreditation of over 225 Special Olympics Programs around the world, Program compliance with the Special Olympics General Rules, and the maintenance of the General Rules. The position incumbent will draft, review and negotiate a wide range of contracts, will work with local counsel to register regional offices/staff in compliance with local laws.

Primary Responsibilities:

*        Manage accreditation of over 100 Special Olympics Programs each year, working directly with Special Olympics regional offices and Programs.

*        Work closely with Finance Department and regional offices to assure timely billing and payment of Program accreditation fees and support an international Special Olympics task force to reform global accreditation fee formula.

*        Manage completion of ongoing Special Olympics General Rules revision process, develop General Rules training materials for use by regions and Programs, and provide training for regional staff.

*        Oversee Program compliance with General Rules and manage resolution of compliance violations up to and including de-accreditation of Programs in serious violation of General Rules.

*        Assist Chief Legal Officer and Associate General Counsel re interpretation and application of General Rules, contracts and other legal matters.

*        Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including IT, consulting, employee, and hotel contracts.

*        Manage and support immigration and visa matters.

*        Review and manage trademark and copyright matters in cooperation with external counsel. 


*        International and nonprofit experience preferred.

*        A Law Degree and membership in the District of Columbia Bar, or ability to gain admission, is required.

*        Must have at least five (5) years of recent practical legal experience.

*        You must successfully meet the minimum qualification requirements for the position (e.g. education, job specific experience, etc).

*        Ability and willingness to travel internationally.

*        Excellent written, oral, presentation, and organizing skills required.

*        Diplomacy, coaching and conflict resolution skills must be substantial.

*        Strong legal analysis and negotiation skills required.
