Internship at MI Innocence Clinic Univ. Mich.

April 10, 2014

The Michigan Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School is seeking applications for internship positions for the summer of 2014. The deadline to apply is April 12, 2014.

The Michigan Innocence Clinic evaluates cases of Michigan inmates who claim to have been wrongfully convicted in cases that usually do not involve DNA evidence. The Clinic’s work has led to the exoneration of eight innocent people in its four-year history. Summer interns work under guidance of supervising attorneys and do a variety of tasks on the Clinic’s open cases. Interns regularly research and draft court motions and briefs for all levels of state and federal courts, and may have the opportunity to appear in court, if there are hearings during the summer. In addition, the work of interns involves vital day-to-day investigative tasks like calling witnesses, writing letters and doing legal or factual research.

Internships will begin on May 19; interns are expected to work full time for 12 weeks, and will receive a stipend of about $1,000 for the summer. While most of the internship positions will be filled by 1Ls, the Clinic accepts applications from both 1Ls and 2Ls. The Clinic’s offices are located in Ann Arbor, though interns will have to occasionally travel into the field to investigate cases and interview witnesses.

Interested students should send a resume and cover letter to innocenceclinicapplications@umich.eduAny questions about the Clinic or the application process can also be sent to that address. More information is also available on the Clinic’s website and Facebook page.
