Partnership for a Healthier America Internship Opportunity

The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is a non-partisan, nonprofit that is devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation’s youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis.   The First Lady serves as PHA’s Honorary Chair and former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Newark Mayor Cory Booker serve as Honorary Vice Chairs. 

Description:  A PHA Legal Intern will assist the legal and strategic initiatives departments of this nonprofit. The intern’s primary responsibility is to assist with legal research, contract review, and basic nonprofit corporate governance as well as to contribute to existing projects and programming initiatives by conducting research and analysis on pressing health care issues. A successful intern will assimilate into the legal and strategic initiatives teams including taking part in meetings and brainstorming sessions, gaining increased responsibility and the ability to participate in projects of specific interest to the intern. 

The goal of PHA’s intern program is to expose interns to the issues facing legal counsel at a nonprofit, as well as to current critical issues surrounding childhood obesity. 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Complete an intern project for one of PHA’s departments that contributes to PHA’s work. 
  • Assist with basic nonprofit corporate governance including contract drafting and review and tax compliance
  • Collaborate with staff on conducting research on assigned topics
  • Assist with drafting research memos and with the editing process
  • Check facts, compile information, and synthesize information and data to prepare draft material for literature reviews, reports, and/or proposals
  • Conduct pre-proposal research to help staff flesh out ideas and best practices
  • Assist in the development of written and presentation materials designed to disseminate results of projects
  • Provide general administrative support 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Law school student or recent graduate
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills in
    English; ability to write and present data and information in a compelling way to different audiences.
  • Knowledge of previous/current policy initiatives aimed at reducing childhood obesity
  • General knowledge of childhood obesity and its contributing factors.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to work well independently and in teams
  • Track record of being able to produce work in a timely manner with flexibility when necessary to adapt to changing work conditions
  • Understanding and interest in improving the health and well-being of people in local communities throughout the U.S.
  • Ability to read carefully, follow directions, and attend to detail
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Savvy Internet research skills as well as a willingness to use print materials and telephone skills for extended research.
