Neighborhood Legal Services Program (DC) Externship ((summer 2013)

March 14, 2013

Students in the family law externship program will be placed at Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP), a non-profit whose mission is to provide client- centered, civil legal services to low-income residents of the District of Columbia. The family law externs will help provide direct civil, legal aid to low-income families residing in neighborhoods located east of the Anacostia River.  NLSP has a broad family law practice that includes assisting victims of domestic violence by obtaining protective and restraining orders; helping parents obtain and keep custody of their children; and providing representation and assistance on other family law matters such as child support and divorce.  Externs will receive substantive legal training in the area of family law and related poverty law areas such as housing and government benefits. Externs may participate in client meetings, trial preparation, and community outreach activities.

The Placement: Two family law externships are available for Summer 2013. The externship is open to second and third year J.D. candidates. The Summer 2013 Family Law Externs will be assigned to our offices located in Ward 7 (4906 Polk Street NE) and Ward 8 (3101 Martin Luther King Avenue SE).

To Apply: Interested law students should send a letter of interest, resume, and writing sample to Heather L. Hodges at hhodges@nlsp.org by April 1, 2013.
