DC Volunteer Lawyers Project flex-time position

 The DC Volunteer Lawyers Project (the “DCVLP”) is seeking an energetic, motivated, and skilled individual to help manage the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Practice. This position is part- and/or flex-time, and is ideal for someone seeking family-friendly employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist GAL Managing Attorney with oversight of all aspects of the GAL practice area, including:

a. Receiving and reviewing GAL referrals from DC Superior Court Judges.

b. Assigning cases to volunteer attorneys to represent children as GALs in disputed custody cases.

c. Supervising and mentoring volunteer attorneys assigned as GALs in custody cases by supporting and assisting GALs in all aspects of their cases.

d. Reviewing all GAL written attorney work product including correspondence and court documents prior to filing.

e. Conducting regular GAL attorney active cases meetings.

f. Conducting regular GAL supervisor meetings.

2. Assist GAL Managing Attorney with designing and implementing training programs and materials for volunteers preparing to represent children as GALs in custody cases, including:

a. Overseeing program planning of basic and advanced training content and overall quality (as measured by trainee feedback).

b. Developing introductory trainings and recruiting expert trainers in specific subject areas as needed.

c. Implementing training programs.

d. Continuously assessing training needs and setting schedule of training sessions accordingly.

e. Providing quality control for course materials.

f. Overseeing evaluation of each training session; revising training programs and materials as necessary.

g. Managing research of relevant legal and policy issues related to the GAL practice.

h. Reviewing, revising and updating documents for inclusion in the GAL practice pleadings and reference library.

4. Assist GAL Managing Attorney with representing DCVLP in practitioner, task force, and other regular and special meetings of local legal services providers and court committees and keeping Management Team and volunteers apprised of relevant information arising from such meetings through memoranda, weekly update, and other communications as needed.

5. Assist GAL Managing Attorney with all administrative matters related to operation of practice.

6. Other duties as assigned.

TIME REQUIREMENTS/COMPENSATION

The Deputy Managing Attorney will work at least partly from home, but will be expected to attend meetings as requested by the DCVLP GAL Practice Managing Attorney at the DCVLP office, located in Friendship Heights, DC and be available to appear in court. The position will require 20 hours per week, AND THE APPLICANT MUST BE AVILABLE DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS. Compensation will be $25,000/year. No health care or other benefits will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. A J.D. degree from an accredited law school.

2. Active D.C. Bar membership or ability to become an active D.C. Bar member prior to first day of employment.

3. Experience handling family law matters as a parent’s attorney or GAL, preferably in DC Superior Court. TRIAL EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. PLEASE IDENTIFY IN YOUR COVER LETTER OR RESUME HOW MANY TRIALS YOU HAVE HANDLED AS A LEAD OR SECOND CHAIR ATTORNEY.

4. Experience supervising or managing other attorneys a plus.

5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

6. Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple priorities at once, and ability to self-motivate and work independently.

7. Excellent interpersonal and networking skills and ability to develop good working relationships with volunteers, staff, partner organizations, and members of local legal services organizations.

8. Ability to meet deadlines and work well with minimal supervision.

9. Competence in MS Word, MS Excel, and online legal research tools and willingness to become competent using DCVLP’s case management system and online pleadings library.

10. Experience and willingness to handle administrative duties related to operation of the GAL practice area.

11. Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information in accordance with attorney-client privilege requirements and accepted standards for legal service providers.
