Attorney Position – ABA Death Penalty Project

The American Bar Association?s Death Penalty Moratorium Project (the Project) is seeking a full time Project Attorney to support the Project’s overall mission to implement the ABA?s 1997 resolution in support of a nationwide halt on executions.  This is a two-year position. The Project Attorney will be primarily responsible for researching and drafting sections of the State Assessments.  This will include: 1) legal and factual research on state death penalty systems, 2) drafting and editing specific chapters of the reports, 3) attending meetings with state-based legal professionals, lawmakers and policy analysts, and 4) assisting in the final production and release of the Assessment Reports.
     Qualifications: Candidate should have a demonstrated interest in criminal law and civil rights, particularly those related to the imposition of the death penalty in the U.S.  Working knowledge of state and federal capital punishment laws and processes, as well as the ABA?s moratorium policy, highly desired.  The position requires 2-4 years experience, with at least 1-2 years post-JD experience.  Requires JD and bar admission in at least one jurisdiction (may be pending admission).
     Salary: Low 50s and an excellent benefits package. This is a grant-funded position and there is therefore no negotiable salary available.
